Picture Happy
I should be a permanent tourist! I love to take both my Orite VC 3210 digital camera and my manual black Canon AE1 around with me everywhere I go. I like the idea of chronicling my life with pictures. You should see, I have hundreds, if not thousands of pictures I've taken since I got the bright idea back in the early 1990's.

Below is a picture I took of a grand canyon...to the microbe. It's actually the bark of a tree that I try to pass off as an arial view of the Grand Canyon. Some people have taken a second glance, hehehe :)

The Black Canon AE1 I Bought For Only $10

The camera below is my Black Canon AE1 the I bought for $10 from a thrift store in Williams, AZ. I like to browse those types of stores for real bargains, and I have to say that camera was by far the best deal I've landed in doing that.

When I asked the lady to see the camera, I was verifying that the little tag said $10. After I confirmed my suspicion, I asked why it was so cheap and she responded by saying she thought there was something wrong with the camera. Then, I decided to carefully inspect the potential prize and took the lens off. In doing that, I noticed part of the inner wall board (slightly thicker than paper) was pealing off and got in the way of the shutter-mirror (for lack of a better term to describe it). My eyes must have been bigger than CD's.

Snag This Deal

I didn't have any cash on me at the time and the thrift store didn't take checks or credit cards, so I had to improvise fast. I asked the clerk to hold the camera for me and made a mad dash for the closest ATM. Before I got home, I stopped at a drug store to buy some super-glue. When I got the camera home, I super-glued the side panel that was jamming the shutter and prayed for the best. A couple days later I came home with a role of film and went out on the town to test my new (used) camera.

Works Like A charm!
My hopes came true. The camera worked as though there was nothing wrong with it at all. I had just purchased a camera that sells for about $250 for only $10 cause some poor sucker didn't think of looking inside to see what might be causing all the pictures to be ruined. What a day. I was happier than a teen-aged boy on prom night...well, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration, but I was excited, anyway.

Capturing What I Like

The situations I like to capture the most are spontaneous ones, such as sunrises and sunsets, storms, and the shots that offer progress or change of the subject matter. For instance the image above is only one of many of the same shot but under different circumstances. That bores some people, but I like to offer a different view of the same thing so people can consider differences in which a given subject can be put under.

Give Me Open Space, Mountains, An Ocean...
My mom, may she rest in peace, always complained my pictures seldom had people in them. I prefer to take photographs of landscapes and she obviously would rather take photos of people in different situations. I like to do that too, but I'm more an "Ansel Adams" type than your local photographer at K-mart taking pictures of the kid w/the family dog...not that there's anything wrong with that.

If I'm taking pictures of people, it's during a camping trip, a party, etc. No different than the average person with a "quick-snap" camera, I guess, but that's the exception for me.

Stay tuned for more images in the future right here on "I'm A ZachHole."

Diggin' Around In Old Boxes
The image below is a picture I found while sifting through old boxes filled with pictures. I took this photo with a disposable camera back in 1994-95 time frame. I was at a friend's house (Adam Thompson) in Cottonwood, AZ at the time for a small get-together when I noticed the sunset. I ran out to the car and had to try my hand at sunsets. Needless-to-say, for a disposable camera, the photograph came out pretty good. The picture is facing West toward Mingus Mountain.

More Arizona Scenery

Below is a picture I took during spring break 1998 with Gabe Wright and Jarod Sears. We went into Sycamore Pass when I spotted this yucca plant budding, which only happens once in a yucca plant's life. In most cases, the yucca plant dies shortly after the seeds begin to spread.

The yucca plant is notable for one thing; It is the only plant in the world that can grow six feet in just a few weeks (specifically the flower). Note the flower is in the middle of the picture in an open space between the trees and bushes in the foreground of the picture.

Spring In Sedona, AZ - Oak Creek Canyon

Below is a photograph of the red rocks of Oak Creek Canyon just North of Sedona, AZ on Hwy 89A heading toward Flagstaff, AZ (which is 26 miles North of Sedona). The picture was taken at the beginning of spring in 2004.

Grand Canyon Detour
If you ever get a chance to cruise Northern Arizona as you're visiting the Grand Canyon, I HIGHLY SUGGEST you consider going from Flagstaff to Sedona via Hwy 89A (don't forget the "A" in 89A) because it's incredible!

Worth The Trip
I've been to South and Central America, Canada, Europe and 33 of the 50 states, and Oak Creek Canyon is one of the top five most beautiful places I've ever been! It's most certainly worth adding the mileage and time to your adventure out west by visiting Oak Creek Canyon. It's just 15-20 minutes South of Flagstaff, AZ.

Flagstaff Arizona

If you decide to take a detour during your trip to the Grand Canyon, then consider the following page about Flagstaff, Arizona. This link gives little trivia tidbits about Flagstaff, average temperatures year round, suggestions for things to do, places to stay, local media available (newspaper, magazine, T.V., Radio, web-cams, current temperature and time, secret hiking spots, photos, etc.). Flagstaff is also your gateway to the Grand Canyon.
